Natural Mosquito sprays

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Natural insect repellents have a tendency to provide coverage for a shorter amount of time than chemical mosquito repellants so. But since their coverage is so much safer, than using Deet or other harmful chemicals. you may find it worth the extra effort applying it more often.

DEET is a nasty chemical that can cause terrible rashes, eye irritation, swelling and even worse problems. The worst problems found to be caused by Deet are unusual but they HAVE happened, they include- brain swelling in children, low blood pressure, anaphylactic shock and there has even been a report of a death.

For best results you should reapply the natural repellants often-probably about every 30 minutes or so but it can be worth it to avoid the nasty side effects of chemical repellants.

Make your own insect repellent sprays by simply combining vodka, rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, or olive oil with one of the following essential oils:

Citronella (also known as rose geranium) is the most effective essential oil against mosquitoes

Thai lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus)

Clove oil works well but can be a skin irritant so I would use it more on clothing

Eucalyptus

Lemon grass

Castor oil

Tea tree oil

Peppermint

Lavender

Cedar

Lavender

Cinnamon oil

Castor oil

You should stick with around a 10-to-1 alcohol to essential oil ratio. This means use 10 Tablespoons of vodka or witch hazel to every Tablespoon of essential oil. Be sure to shake well before each use.

Store in a dark bottle, away from heat or sunlight. If you are pregnant or nursing please do not use any mosquito repellent, natural or otherwise, until after you’ve gotten the ok from your physician. Don’t go overboard with essential oils as they are potent and could cause skin irritation, or some type of a reaction, if you use too much.

Lice-Natural Controls

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Lice are awful pests that nearly everyone will come into contact with at some point. But it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. You don’t have to use chemicals that could have scary consequences. Besides, some people are concerned that lice (like so many other pests) are becoming immune to the controls that people have used for years.

But what did people do before these chemicals came into being? Lice have been around for centuries.

Aren’t there some sort of natural lice controls that you can use?

With this blog we plan to bring you as many natural lice controls as possible so that you won’t have to worry about head lice, body lice or pubic lice any more.

I am a licensed Cosmetologist and while going to school to become a Cosmetologist I was taught all about head lice and how to look for them.

Head lice tend to congregate behind the ears so this was the first place that we were taught to look.

You also should look at the individual strands of hair very carefully, even using a magnifying glass if necessary, to look for the lice eggs. These are called nits.

Nits are a white colored egg that is attached to the hair shaft. Nits do not brush out easily like skin cells or dandruff will.

Nits actually ‘glue’ themselves to the hair shaft making it hard to get rid of them all.

One method is to was and comb your hair daily with a nit remover comb. The teeth of the nit remover comb are spaced closely together so as to catch the nit eggs and remove them while combing your hair.

Now, this can seem like a lot of work but if you have a child with beautiful long hair they will likely not want their hair to be cut short. Yet with long hair it provides the lice and their eggs with plenty of places to hide

If you are pregnant you will not want to use chemicals that could harm your baby.

Washing your hair daily and using a nit remover comb after every shampoo is a safe natural and low cost way to get rid of the head lice.

Natural Fly Control

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

If you are looking for natural fly control then here are some tips for you.

First of all, one of the best ways to control flies is using gly stickers. Fly stickers have been around for years because they WORK!

If you don’t like the look of having fly stickers hanging around your home you can use another type of ’stciker’. You will find these in the rodent control area of most stores but we usually get them in Walmart.

We get the cardborad pieces with the sticky on them. These can be laid around your hom and will not only help you with getting  rid of flies but also, mice, ants, mothsand even snakes. Though if you have a snake that has gotten in yoiur home (as long as it is not poisonous- in which case you need to get help from professionals)if it is very big you may need to attach several to a piece of plywood so that it can be able to hold the snake. Otherwise your snake will just slither off with the sticker still attached to it.

Ok, back to natural fly control.

Another tip is to buy a fly catchre trap in which you put some raw meat into the container with some water. You attch the lid and hang the trap up AWAY from your home. The flies will be attracted to the rotting meat and will get caught in the trap and will drown.

We have used this and it is VERY effective. Just remember to empty the trap and then refill with fresh meat and water. It doesn’t take a lot of meat and this trap can be used over and over. It is a easy, natural fly control that is low cost (cheap)

Another Natural Mosquito Control…

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Trouble with mosquitoes?

If you want to control mosquitoes naturally here are some options:

First of all, like I already mentioned, chickens- you get all sorts of pest control while getting the bonuses of eggs and/or meat.

Use dunks. They are a natural mosquito control that rely on a natural bacteria to kill the larvae. They work. Start using them first thing in Spring whenever you have any standing water.

Get rid of all standing water that is not necessary

You can mix together some lemon amonia and a good squirt of lemon dish soap in a hose end sprayer. This will mix with water as it exits the end of your hose. You then spray all around your yard/home. This will help to keep mosquitoes away until it rains and then you will need to repeat the process.

I will be adding more natural mosquito and other pests controls soon so please bookmark this site and check back often.

Have something natural that works? Leave a comment and let us know. Thanks!

Mosquito control?

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I don’t know about you but where we live is mosquito country. Right now the mosquitoes are so bad that you can barely go outside- even during the day.
Now, a few years ago we chicken sat.
‘What’s that’ you wonder?
Well a friend had us watch her chickens for 6 months.
We had never had chickens before so we had no idea what we were in for
We had taken care of them at her place for a few days at a time but this was a long period of time so she brought them over here to our place.
Well, not only was it a great experience but we found that by having chickens that our mosquito population went WAY DOWN.
We could actually go outside and enjoy ourselves.
For a time after the chickens went back home we still reapt the benefits by having little problems with mosquitoes but in recent times the mosquitoes have gotten worse again.
So, last year we decided that we wanted to get chickens of our own.
Having chickens has multiple benefits like:
less mosquitoes and other bad bugs
You get eggs and, if you want to, you get meat
You get fertilizer for your garden plants
They are better than some tv shows when it comes to entertainment
Well, we got 8 chickens last year and they were doing great until the raccoons realized that they were here.
By this January we were down to one last chicken from last year.
We had been trying to keep from getting too attached as we wee hoping to possibly use some for meat as meat prices in the stores is getting outrageous AND it seems like sometimes the meat isn’t as good and we wonder what all of the antibiotics and such are doing for not only the animals, the environment but for us when we eat the meat.
Farm fresh meat just seems like a better choice.
Anyway, sorry for the rant :0)
So, this Spring we got 5 more meat birds and 7 more dual purpose for meat and or eggs.
Now, the chickens that we got this Spring aren’t big enough to realize about eating the mosquitoes. They eat weeds, grass and some bugs but for some reason we aren’t yet seeing the big decrease in the mosquito population
We hope that they will soon start to eat away at this mosquito infestation.
I don’t know if it is more certain kinds of chickens that eat the mosquitoes better? I cannot remember what type our friend had. But, we have Barred Rocks, Americanna’s, Rhode Island Reds and the meat birds which I cannot remember at this time.

So, here we are swarmed by mosquitoes and waiting for the chickens instinct to eat mosquitoes to kick in- Will It?

Tomorrow we plan to give you some ways to keep mosquitoes from biting you and something else that will kill mosquitoes naturally for free.
