Home Remedies For Ear Aches

July 3rd, 2010

Earaches can be slightly painful to extremely painful. An ear ache is caused by a fluid buildup due to some infection or pressure build up in the middle ear. Swimming, bathing, allergies or even cleaning your ear with cotton bud can lead to discomfort, bacterial growth and infection in the ear.

Most common cause of the earache is due to plugged ‘Eustachian’ tubes (a small tube connecting the ear to the nose). If and when your Eustachian tubes become blocked possibility of bacteria buildup or infection, fluid will gather resulting in a painful earache. Increase in pressure leads to pain, hearing loss, itching and swelling elsewhere in the ear. To avoid ear aches and infections, one should keep the Eustachian tube free of pollutants and irritants and regularly clean the nasal passage.

Try some of these home remedies for earache

The greatest pain reliever is warm, moist heat around the ear. A warm compress-such as a towel rung out in hot water and pressed against the ear-brings the most immediate relief.

After you take a shower or bath; blow dry your ears instead of rubbing them. Soothe the ear with the warm setting of a hairdryer.

Puncture a piece of garlic and pour the juice in the ear. Garlic being a natural antibiotic will help to take the pain away.

Put some mineral oil (oil derived from a mineral source, such as petroleum, because it is inexpensive and rarely causes allergic reactions) in your ear before going in the water. Wear earplugs while swimming and avoid swimming in dirty waters.

Warm few drops of olive oil in a spoon. Using the dropper, put 2-3 drops in each ear after the oil has cooled down. This will help relieve pain.

Excessive earwax can also cause hearing problems and aches. Put a capful of hydrogen peroxide in each ear, let it set for a minute or two, and then let it drain out. One drop of alcohol after bathing can also prevent excessive earwax.

A hot water bottle wrapped in a towel also makes a comforting pillow for an aching ear.

Press a dual-purpose first-aid gel pack that you can warm up in hot water or the microwave on your ear. It will make you feel better.

Warm up an oven-safe plate, wrap it in a towel, and rest your aching ear right on it. The plate should be warm and comforting, not hot,

Warm mineral oil may soothe a sore ear. Use a dropper to drip the oil in and gently pull the outside of the ear to make sure it goes down.

If wind bothers your aching ears, wear a scarf when you’re outside, or put cotton in the opening of the ear, but avoid pushing the cotton down from where you can not retrieve it with your fingers.

If your ears hurt when the pressure changes, especially during descent and landing during an airplane flight, chew gum or suck on candy. The chewing or sucking will activate the muscles that send air to your inner ears, when you hear your ears “pop,” you’ll feel better.

If chewing doesn’t work, close your mouth, relax your cheek muscles, hold your nose and blow one nostril at a time gently until you feel relief.

Bugged by a bug in your ear? Flood the ear till full of alcohol using the ear dropper to kill the bug, then gently fill the ear with water from an ear syringe.

The reader of this article should exercise all precautions while following instructions on the recipes from this article. Avoid using if you are allergic to something. The responsibility lies with the reader, not the site, and the writer.

Antibiotics to Treat Your Child’s Ear Infection – A Growing Cause For Concern

June 26th, 2010

By age 3, two-thirds of all children will have suffered from at least one ear infection. Next to the common cold, a childhood ear infection is the most commonly diagnosed condition in the United States. Antibiotics are usually the preferred remedy for healing, but a lot of the time, prescriptions are written without a certainty that an ear infection even exists. This precautionary treatment has raised a growing cause for concern.

Do you know what you are really giving to your child?

Though it may feel natural to relieve your child’s ear infection pain with an antibiotic, you may be giving them something more harmful then helpful. Antibiotic therapy is extremely serious and may be life threatening if an allergic reaction occurs. Blatant misuse of antibiotic prescriptions have allowed for “super-strains” of bacteria to develop. These “super-strains” often times become resilient to antibiotic treatment. The strains are making it more and more difficult for advanced surgical procedures to be performed. If medicine does not have an effective antibiotic, then bacteria will not allow any life-changing surgery to occur.

Is chiropractic care an alternative to antibiotics?

Research has shown that antibiotics usually make very little difference in the recovery of ear infections. Traditional treatment usually involves the antibiotic amoxicillin. A recent study showed that children taking the antibiotic compromised immune system function. Children receiving amoxicillin were twice as likely to have a recurring ear problem, compared to those who received a placebo.

An impaired nerve supply can make a child’s ears and Eustachian tubes susceptible to fluid buildup or infection. Restoring proper nerve supply with safe and natural chiropractic care has helped thousands of children proactively fight off many ear infections, as well as keep a second one from returning.

Natural Effective Relief

An ear infection contains fluid that accumulates behind the eardrum. A structural blockage may be the cause of the chronic infection. The correction given by a chiropractor is a gentle movement to the bones of the head and neck. This allows for drainage of the fluid to be released from the ear drum.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics indicates that there is a strong connection between chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections. Of the 332 children in the study with chronic ear infections, each child, ranging from age 27 days to 5 years was given a series of chiropractic adjustments. Almost 80% of the children did not experience an ear infection within six months. The sixth month period included steady maintenance treatment every four to six weeks.

The body is a natural healer. Rather than give medication to block and suppress any illness with a chance of pushing it further into the body, allow your child’s body to heal naturally by maintaining a healthy diet, receiving chiropractic care, and continuing to research alternatives to medicine.

Natural Ways to Proactively Fight Off Your Child’s Ear Infection

June 19th, 2010

Over 35% of all visits to the pediatrician are a result of an ear infection. Antibiotics are usually the treatment of choice, but more and more parents now understand the benefits of natural remedies. These natural approaches also happen to be the safest. Most infections are not even a threat to your child’s well-being. Developing a strong immune system for your child is a key component in making sure an infection does not occur.

Does your child have allergies?

Food allergies are a common problem in children, and often time are overlooked. In his book, “Childhood Ear Infections,” Dr. Schmidt presents over sixteen scientific studies that present many chronic ear infections are actually due to food or airborne allergies or hypersensitivity reactions. Eliminating the allergen allows the infection to go away on its own.

Cow’s milk and other dairy products are the number one allergen implicated in an ear infection. Other allergy prone foods include wheat, eggs, chocolate, citrus, corn, soy, peanuts, nuts, shellfish, sugar, and yeast. An elimination or rotation diet is an effective way to determine if a specific food is affecting your child.

Why is nutrition so important to ear infection prevention?

Nutritional deficiency is a major cause of an ear infection. We truly are what we eat. We can improve our health by eating more nutritious food and eliminating foods that contain high amounts of sugar, hydrogenated oils, and empty calories.

An organic, unprocessed, whole foods diet is essential for creating healthy cells and is a key factor in maintaining a vibrant immune system. Dietary fats can either enhance or impair our immune function, depending on what type of fat you eat. The incorrect types of fat can predispose a child to recurrent infections and inflammatory conditions. Bad fats include potato chips, hydrogenated oils, fried foods, processed and saturated fats.

Essential fatty acids promote normal immune and nervous system function. These fatty acids are found in extra virgin olive oil, cold water fish, flax seed oil, walnuts, almonds, and free range eggs. A recent study found that the U.S. has the highest incidence of essential fatty acid deficiency in the developed world. If our children were simply supplemented with a daily dose of essential fatty acids, our children would be far less sick.

What do you do if your child has an ear infection in the future?

An impaired nerve supply can make a child’s ears and eustachian tubes susceptible to fluid buildup or infection. Restoring proper nerve supply with safe and natural chiropractic care has helped thousands of children proactively fight off any ear infections, or keep a second one from returning.

An ear infection contains fluid that accumulates behind the ear drum. A structural blockage may be the cause of the chronic infection. The correction given by a chiropractor is a gentle movement to the bones of the head and neck. This allows for drainage of the fluid to be released from the ear drum.

Giving medication to block or suppress any illness can push the illness further into the body. Check your children for food allergies, maintain their healthy immune system with a natural, nutritional diet, and proactively seek chiropractic care so your child can be free from an ear infection.

Natural Remedies for Swimmer’s Ear

June 12th, 2010

Swimmer’s ear is an infection in the external part of ear or in ear canal. The problem is caused as the excess exposure of the ears to water. After the ear gets drenched the moisture gets in the water resistant layer of the skin and it starts to become soft and wrinkled. Then automatically, bacteria and fungi start to form on the surface of the exposed skin.

Symptoms-It would look itchy, and you’d notice there’s very little earwax. It would feel moist and smell clammy from bacteria burrowing and tunneling into the skin.

Natural remedies-You can cure the problem with using some simple and useful nature based remedies as they have no side effects. If you have got the infection in your ear and the infection is mild, it can be treated with a few drops of white vinegar placed on the ear. Put just a few drops of vinegar in the ear and leave it in the ear canal for about 5 minutes or so before turning the ear down. This will drain the drops.

You can use the hair dryer to evaporate the water molecules in the ear. You should set it to warm and sway it across the ear as it blow dries your ear. The warm air will enable evaporation of any trapped water. You can hold your both nostrils closed and blow through your nose until you hear a pop. This will relieve you from the fullness of the ear.

You can heat 2 garlic cloves after removing its skin removed in two spoons of mustard oil till the garlic starts turning black. Sieve it and put 2-3 drops of this oil in the ear. This will provide you relief from the extreme pain. You can take a sock, fill it with salt and put it in the microwave until it is warm and put when it is tolerable to the body. Lay your head on it. This may drain the fluid out.

You can use over the counter antiseptic eardrops to get relief from pain. You can also make your own eardrops by mixing equal parts of alcohol and white vinegar. Warm the drops first. Leave them in the ear for a couple of minutes, and then tilt your head to let them drain out.

Dog Ear infections are quite common as this condition affects about 20% of our dogs

June 12th, 2010

Dog Ear infections are quite common as this condition affects about 20% of our dogs either regularly or sporadically, and these infections can affect the outer part of the ear, known as the canal, the middle of the ear, or the inner most part of the ear.

The term most used to describe the inflammation of the outer ear is otitis externa.

These infections can be chronic conditions that linger on, especially external ear infections, or the can happen very suddenly.

Both of these conditions can cause damage to ear canal lining, which will than produce excessive amounts of ear wax in your dog ears, which in turn will then cause thickening of the lining, and finally results in the ear canal becoming scarred.

In the worst of scenarios of these ear infections, once calcification of the ear canal happens, the only resolution will be to have it corrected by ear surgery.

These infections can make your pet fell down right miserable.

It hurts.

Some of the signs of infections that your dog show is they will start to shake their head a lot as they are actually trying to get the debris and fluid out. They will constantly scratch their ears, and the ears will become inflamed and start to produce an offensive odor from the bacteria build up.

These infections also will cause a discharge in the ear of fluid and even a puss like discharge, and because of the constant pain your pet is in, their behavior will change and they may start to whine, become irritable, and may actually become depressed as well.

So what actually causes these infections and what is the biggest cause?

Although parasites can sometimes be the cause of these infections such as ear mites, ear mites are very rare in dogs but are the number one cause of cat’s ear infections. Bacteria and yeast cells, as well as foreign organisms that get into your dogs ears are the top causes of these infections.

Yeast infection will be caused by a build of ear wax in your dog, while foreign substances can enter into your dogs ears by swimming, rolling on the grass that may be infected with a bacteria (or parasite), and finally too much ear cleaning of your dogs ears can actually put the ears at risk for infection.

Humid climates also make a fertile breeding ground for these infections.

There are other conditions that can put your dog at risk for ear infections as well, such as endocrine diseases like hypothyroidism, and conditions that can weaken your dog’s immune systems, such as respiratory conditions.

Allergies in dogs, unlike or almost opposite of human allergies, actually put your dogs more at risk than dogs without allergies, because they cause the ears to become inflamed and this makes the ears naturally heat up, producing the breeding ground for yeast and bacteria, and also lays the ground for chronic forms of ear infections.

Dogs that are more sensitive to allergies, thus, will also be more susceptible to ear infections. Some of these breeds include Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Retrievers (especially Labrador’s), and Schnauzers.

Dalmatians and Greyhounds, because of their natural ear weaknesses and proneness to becoming deaf, are also more at risk.

Some breeds of dogs actually have ears that by nature become perfect breeding grounds because of their skin or the glands located in their ear canals such as Beagles, Basset Hounds, Springer Spaniels, and Labradors.

Finally, there are breeds that just flat out have a lot of natural hair in their ears which restricts the airflow into their ears, making them a lot more at risk. These breeds include Poodles, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, and Lhasa Apsos.

These infections can also be caused by plant awns, commonly known as stick-tights. These substances can stick to your pet’s fur and eventually find their way into the ears. Once there, they will cause trauma to the ear canal.

If you frequent wooded areas, always check your pet’s ears after the visit.

Diagnosing the actual cause of these infections in your dog is best left to your Veterinarian. They can take cotton swab samples and make the proper diagnosis and than once made, can suggest the proper treatment.

The treatment, of course will depend on the cause of the infection, and than secondary conditions that may be the cause.

Antibiotics are used for most of the bacterial infections, and antifungal agents are generally used for the yeast infections. System diseases that cause ear infections, such as a hormone problems or any type of an allergy, will have to be treated with programs that will treat all of the symptoms, not just the ear infections.

Vitamin C supplements, especially liquid forms because of the superior absorption, are effective in helping to reduce the inflammation that these infections will cause.

There are several varying opinions on the best way to clean your dog’s ears. But there is one definite way not to; do not use just plain water to clean your dogs ears. That will only add to the wax problem.

Cleaning your pets ears with a mixture of vinegar and water is recommended, and there are several herbal remedies that you could try including Calendula, a antifungal with very good healing agents, organic grape, a very strong antibiotic and antibacterial herb, and Mullein and Garlic, both of which have varying forms of antibody and antiviral qualities.

Your dog depends of your observations and help to help them from getting this painful condition.

We are especially fond of dogs, and we have a 12 year old Dalmatian (our 3rd) and a “mutt” that we rescued when someone threw him away to die in a vacant field. He found us, nearly starved to death, and weighed about 2 pounds. After severe bouts of mange and severe dehydration, and over 1,000.00 in veterinarian bills, we saved the little guys life, and he is one of the best, if not the best, dogs we have ever had and today is a muscular, fit, and firm 70 pound best friend. After finishing my MBA, which at middle age was not easy, I decided to keep the research work ethics that I acquired, and devote about two hours each night in understanding the health benefits of supplementation for both humans and pets and how they might strengthen our, as well as our pets, immune system in a pre-emptive approach to health rather than a reactionary approach. Both of my daughters are avid cat lovers, and asked me to help them with health concerns and challenges with their cats. I am not a veterinarian nor claim to be, just a lover of pets that loves to research and pass on some knowledge that might be helpful, or at least stimulating to the thought process

What You Need To Know About Ear Infection And Remedy

June 10th, 2010

Ear infections are a fairly common occurrence for many people. The ear canals are very prone to developing bacterial and fungal infections, especially in young children

. In fact, each year over 20 million doctor’s visits are related to ear infections in children alone.

If you’re a parent, or even an adult who gets frequent ear infections, then you may want to find some information about ear infection and remedy. Keep on reading to learn about the causes, symptoms and ways to treat an ear infection.

Ear infection is otherwise known as otitis media. It is an infection which takes place right behind an ear drum. It is often caused by bacteria that come from an outside source, but simple water can also turn an ear canal into a breeding ground for infection.

Infecting bacteria usually come through a channel called the Eustachian tube, which connects the back of the threat to the inner ear. When it comes to ear infection and curing it, it’s important to understand how this works.

Normally this tube provides a way to drain the fluids that get built up as part of the ear’s normal workings. When there’s a problem with this tube, ear infections occur. One way this can happen is through other diseases. For example, the common cold can damage some of the tiny hair follicles in this tube, causing them to stop working properly. This leads to bacteria buildup and eventually ear infection.

The next thing to understand about ear infection and its cures are the symptoms. The most common symptom of ear infection is simply pain. The pain of an ear infection can vary from being mildly annoying to extremely painful. In some cases, there may also be some kind of discharge that comes from the ear. If the infection spreads, it can lead to a number of other symptoms, including flu-like symptoms such as fever and vomiting. In some cases, it can put a person off balance and cause dizziness.

When it comes to ear infection and remedy, there are a number of options for relieving and curing the problem. Most doctors will prescribe a prescription antibiotic that will help give your body a boost in fighting off the infection.

However, most people dealing with an ear infection need relief right away, and visiting a doctor may not be possible for hours or even days. In those cases, there are many home remedies that can be used to help deal with ear infections. Sometimes, simple over the counter ear drops can be enough to combat the pain and irritation of ear infection. If that doesn’t work, there are many more outlandish home remedies. You can use a number of different items that you may have around your home to help get ear infection relief.

Some examples include vinegar, lemon juice, and even garlic cooked in oil. You may need to test out some different home remedies to find one that works for you. However, before trying any home remedies it’s a good idea to visit a doctor at least once.

Ear Infection Treatment – Natural, Efficient, Cost Effective

June 1st, 2010

Ear infection

treatment can be suppressive (the more common kind) or can be holistic. Holistic treatment invariably works, not so much by dealing with the infection, but by raising your immune system, so you can heal yourself.

Any infection shows that your immune system is not in the best shape. It’s struggling to do its job. Which is to protect you from getting any infection, any disease.

So, by choosing an holistic ear infection treatment, you’re not just clearing upi the infection, you’re also making yourself healthier all round, so you will get fewer infections, fewer health problems.

Suppressive ear infection treatments not only undermines your immune system, they often don’t work. I’ve had many children come to me with ear infections, who have been on constant antibiotics for months or even years. But to no avail.

The infection remains.

Things which tend to undermine your immune system are a diet of processed foods, artificial this, fast that. Junk food and soft drinks do so much harm.

Lack of sleep is probably the fastest way to undermine your immune system. Everyone needs their optimum amount. For some it may only be five hours. For others it’s more like eight.

The homeopathic treatment of any infections work by exciting your immune system, so it is now in a position to go about its business of healing you. One of the most common homeopathic medicines which deal effectively with ear infections is called Pulsatilla.

The unique symptom picture of Pulsatilla is that the ear pain is worse at night and it’s worse for any warmth (which is often expressed by cupping a hand over the affected ear).

Pulsatilla is probably the most effective ear infection remedy. One of them anyway.

Now Hear This – Ear Infections Don’t Need Antibiotics!

June 1st, 2010

Homeopathy is the single most efficacious method of treating ear infections. It has been used by homeopathic physicians and mothers for nearly 2oo years. In fact, more moms come to homeopathy via their child’s problems with ear pain than through any other illness. Why is this? Because homeopathy has a record of healing the pain, discharge and subsequent ear problems in the most gentle way.

One of the criticisms of homeopathy is that although it has the powerful ability to heal, it can be difficult to determine which remedy is correct. Not so with ear infections and their accompanying pains. There are generally two main remedies for the use with otitis media: Belladonna and Chamomilla. We’ll cover them in this article. Each has its own corresponding cluster of symptoms so that it is an easy match. If, however, you find this still to not work, contact an experienced homeopath. Many work on the phone for such a problem.

The homeopathic remedy, Belladonna, is the premiere ear infection remedy. The pathology is ushered in quickly and with great gusto. In other words, the child appears well one moment and in the next, he is in excruciating pain. The outer ear, as well as the inside, are often red and can be swollen if peered at through an otoscope. The infection is accompanied by a fever, which is not of a mild nature either. It is generally high, often registering 103-105 degrees. The child may be delusional with fever, cross and thrashing or simply in extreme pain. This is when the well advised mom should administer Belladonna 30 every 15 to 30 minutes. Often the child will fall deeply to sleep after a few doses. This is an indication that the correct remedy has been chosen. If the child awakens with the same symptoms as before, administration should ensue again.

The next remedy to consider is Pulsatilla 30 . This remedy covers the pain of a child who doesn’t have as high a temperate or as extreme of pain. In other words, the illness is tempered in comparison to Belladonna. This child is characterized by lack of thirst and a great desire to be held and loved. The more comfort offered, the better the child feels. If she (I say she because it is more often a remedy for females) isn’t given the affection she craves, she may become irritable and demanding. Oddly enough, this little girl can come down with an ear infection after indulging in ice cream within the last few days. This would not be uncommon for such a child as she craves sweet, creamy foods such as ice cream, cheese, peanut butter and the like.

We can hand our children antibiotics for ear pain and discharge. But is the price worth the value? I think not. Antibiotics are of questionable safety and should your child need them for a truly serious illness, they will have los their ability to kill infections. Instead, if a mom can learn a little homeopathy to be used on her own, she will find that the rewards are numerous. As a mother myself who wholly depended on homeopathy for the care of my three children and as a homeopathic practitioner, I urge all mothers to begin their study of some of the simple methods of cure for their own children. Consider my CD’s, books and phone seminars designed with mothers in mind. Then, the next time your little one comes to you with a plea for help, you’ll be prepared with the correct arsenal of information and homeopathic remedies. From one mother to another… I wish the best for the health and care of your family.

Ear Infection and its Treatment

May 24th, 2010

Did you know that there is a wealth of ear infection remedies that can help relieve the painful symptoms of ear ache, muffled hearing, congestion, swollen glands, fatigue and fever? Many of these ear infection remedies you should be able to find in your kitchen or bathroom cabinet – or maybe you can borrow them from a neighbor.

Ear Infections can be extremely painful for young children and often parents feel stressed and unclear about what to do when their son or daughter is in pain. Antibiotics have long been the treatment offered by medical specialists. However, recent studies have concluded using antibiotics does not offer much help with this painful pediatric condition.

Treatment:

1. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory that can soothe inflamed tissues like painful ears and swollen Eustachian tubes. Ginger is best used raw. I love adding raw ginger to my vegetable juices – it gives them a nice tang. Added to soups, teas and stir frys, it has a warming effect on the body. If you have not got raw ginger then use it a powder, capsule or preserved form.

2. Anistil is the remedy helping adults overcome ear infections and prevent new ones. No side effects and good for your overall health as well. I can’t imagine you’d look for anything else, not if you know the truth about ear infections, so I’ll leave you with a parting tip to keep in mind that your health is most important and Anistil knows that too.

3. Fasten the warm onion bag to the painful ear with a woolen scarf or hat. (Use only natural materials, like cotton, wool, flax or silk.)

4. Xylitol is a great option for those that are seeking to avoid ear infections. This naturally occurring substance has proven to reduce the incidence of ear infection in those that have a history of them. The substance is derived from raspberries as well as plums and is a naturally occurring sweetener.

5. Take the child off refined sugars including sugar, corn syrup, corn sweeteners, turbinado sugar, brown sugar, honey, and others-sugar weakens the immune system.

6. An imbalanced diet with too much refined food causes an accumulation of toxins and a breeding ground for bacteria. It is important to base the diet around fresh fruit and vegetables, quality proteins, natural oils and small amounts of whole grains.

7. One of the most renowned ear infection remedies is vitamin C. Most homes will have a supply of vitamin C. Take at least 3-5 gram a day to strengthen your immunity.

8. Herbs can build protection and natural immunity to all types of infections. Olive leaf extract, astragalus and echinacea (which is particularly good for children) are good choices as effective inner ear infection remedies. These herbs can be taken as a tea or in liquid, capsule or tablet form

9. Take the children off all dairy products-they are mucous forming and will drive mucous into the inner ear.

10. Use homeopathic eardrops to soothe the ears.

Home Remedies for Ear Infections and Earaches, Useful Remedies

May 17th, 2010

The ear is a very sensitive organ; it is the house of one of the most important senses of the human body – the auditory sense. Due to its delicate nature, there are several problems that can occur with the human ear. One of the most common problems occurs when the ear gets infected. In severe cases, pus formation may occur. Such inflammations of the ear commonly occur in children.

Ear infections are more common in babies and younger children because the Eustachian tubes (the narrow passage way that connects the middle ear to the nose) are narrower than an adult or older child’s and, therefore, is easily blocked by fluid in the ear. Ear infections are also most likely to occur during a cold.

Even more effective than heat alone is a hot onion poultice. This is something you can make up at home quickly and easily. To make an onion poultice, heat ½ an onion in an oven or griller for a few minutes till hot. Wrap it in some cheesecloth or a clean cloth and apply it directly on the ear to allow the anti-infective fumes to work their way into the ear

Garlic can also be crushed and used for the earache by crushing a clove of garlic into one tsp of olive oil and then warm to blood temperature.
